Creating Beautiful Botanical Art with
Jenny Phillips:

Join legendary artist and instructor Jenny Phillips who will guide you to achieve form, surface detail and texture through drawing and then painting. Fee $260 - Limit 20.
Illustrating from the Herbarium with Bobbi Angell: 9am–4pm
Bobbi has drawn over 2,400 illustrations
from herbarium specimens over nearly 30
years. You will prepare sketches and compose
plates using pressed specimens of
plants, exploring ways to restore life to flattened
dried forms, focusing on diagnostic
characters to accurately depict individual
species.

Field Trip and "Behind-the-Scenes" Tour:

Arrive at The Getty for a self-guided tour
and lunch on your own (many options
there). A limited number of spaces are
available for an official Behind the Scenes
Guided Tour from 1–3:30 PM to see original
Maria Sybilla Merian paintings, original
Joris Hoefnagel manuscript illuminations,
and rare books of botanical art.

Light on Form in Color with Mindy Lighthipe: 10am–3:45pm

No Color...No Kidding!™– On Vellum! with Martha Kemp:
10am–3:45pm

Graphite drawing is all about control, but
vellum has a way of insinuating its own
texture into the finished look. Under
Martha’s guidance, explore the subtle
ways that vellum can enhance and enliven
your graphite pencil botanical drawings.

Chinese Brush Painting in the Garden with Gloria Whea-Fun Teng: 10am–3:45pm
Learn the basics of traditional Chinese
brush painting, similar to Sumi-e. In the
Chinese garden of Huntington, you will be
inspired to find the essence of the plant
and the graceful gesture that characterizes
this art form. Fee $125. - Limit 16.
