Activities at the LA Arboretum

Drawing Trees in the Field with Dr. Dick Rauh, Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden: 8:30-11:30am

Under Dr. Rauh’s guidance, learn to sketch tree habits in the Arboretum’s extensive collection of specimen trees. Bus leaves Hilton at 8 AM, returns 12 noon. Fee: $50 - Limit 16. Materials List PDF

Self-Guided or Guided Tour of the LA County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens: 8:30-11:30am

Spend a leisurely morning on your own or sign up for docent-led tour. Bus leaves the Hilton at 8 AM, and returns at 12 noon. Fee $25 - Limit 20.

Art Papers – An Artist’s Guide with Kathie Miranda: 9am–12pm

Join Kathie for an in-depth review of art papers from the artist’s perspective. Learn properties of papers and qualities that make them suitable for different media. Artists will receive sample pieces. Materials fee $12 - Limit 15.

Understanding Complex Forms in Plants with Lee McCaffree:
9am–12pm

Sunflowers, flower clusters, cones or succulents! This workshop will concentrate on ways to simplify complicated structures by using geometric patterns of lines, circles and spirals. Use pencil drawings to build a framework as a guide for adding details to your finished work. Great for beginners! No fee - Limit 16. Materials List PDF

Painting Citrus with Catherine Watters: 1-4pm

Activities at the Huntington

Watercolor Demo/Borneo and her Series, Japanese Cherry Blossoms with Mieko Ishikawa: 10am-12pm

Mieko will show her watercolor technique with the aid of a projector, so we can watch each brushstroke on the big screen. She will also show and discuss her recent work in the mountain forests of Borneo and Japanese Cherry Blossoms. No fee - Limit 30.

Photoshop for Botanical Artists I: From Paint to Print and Web with Deborah Shaw & Bonnie Stein: 10am-12pm

An in-depth demo of how to delete the (paper) background from your scanned image. Class participants will receive a CD with step-by-step tutorials to take home. Class registrants will also be able to submit their “most difficult images” before the conference for possible selection for the demos. This class can be taken separately or with the Photoshop II class in the afternoon. No fee. Limit 60. No materials needed.

It’s Not Easy Making Green - Watercolor with Margaret Best:
10am-12pm

Many artists have difficulty creating a green that closely matches the subject matter. Margaret will guide participants in making natural looking greens in a number of ways with guidance to create their own green mixing chart. No fee - Limit 16.

View “Small Works” Exhibition: 10 am – 3:45 pm

Take a bus to the Huntington for a Self-Guided or Guided Tour of the gardens including the new classical Chinese Garden and to see the ASBA “Small Works” Exhibition. Go for the entire day, or just the morning or afternoon. Select the 10 AM tour in registration for the day or morning, or 1 PM for the afternoon only. Bus leaves Hillton at 9:30 AM and 12 PM. Bus returns at 3:45 PM.

Colored Pencil Tips and Techniques with Libby Kyer:
1–3:45pm, Repeats Saturday!

Master of colored pencil, Libby will discuss specialty tools and techniques for the media. Watch her special tips and techniques projected, and view each mark on the big screen. No fee - Limit 30.

Painting Petals with Margaret Best: 1–3:45pm

Geared towards mastering technical brush skills, Margaret will provide meaningful exercises to improve brush control, from free flowing wet-on-wet applications to applying fine details with dry brush work. No fee - Limit 16.

Photoshop for Artists II: From Paint to Print and Web with Deborah Shaw & Bonnie Stein: 1–3:45pm

In-depth demos on vital techniques to get the best out of your scanned images, including Masking, Color Correcting and Finishing. Class participants receive a CD with step-by-step tutorials to take home. Class registrants will also be able to submit their “most difficult images” before the conference for possible selection for the demos. This class can be taken separately or with the Photoshop I class in the morning.
