8 am - 12:30 pm: Bus Trip to Arnold Arboretum

Explore on foot the world famous Arnold Arboretum, a key link in Olmstead‘s “Emerald Necklace,” a circle of parks ringing Boston. The oldest public arboretum in North America, Arnold continues to be a leading center for plant study. After a guided walking tour, visit Arnold’s library to view treasured botanical art books from their archives. Limit 34. Fee: $50.

8:30 - 12:30 pm: Bus Trip to Harvard University Herbaria and Botany Library

Travel into Cambridge to the Harvard University Herbaria and Botany Library and spend the morning discovering herbarium practices (archiving of pressed plants) and history, exploring the Ames Orchid Herbarium, and seeing amazing examples from the archives and special collections of botanical art treasures and published works. Limit 32. Fee: $50.

 

John Pastoriza Piñol9 am - 12 pm: Advanced Foreshortening Techniques - John Pastoriza Piñol

Keep your botanical drawings accurate and make them look more three-dimensional by learning to draw leaves and flowers in proper perspective. Work through a series of exercises designed to help foreshortening concepts sink in and become an integral part of your artist’s toolbox. Limit 15. Fee: $50.

 

 

 

9 am - 12 pm: Is My Work Saleable? - Susan Frei Nathan

Through Susan’s constructive review of participants’ portfolios in a group setting, based on her own experiences as an art dealer, investigate the potential to sell your art in the fine art market. Discussion of technique, composition, color, choice of subject matter helps to draw out your professional goals. Explore placing artwork in private and corporate collections. Must bring only three examples of original artwork (no reproductions). (Note: opinions are those of the instructor, and do not necessarily reflect ASBA or other opinions) Limit 12. Fee: $50.

Explore how using reflected light can add dimension, color, subtlety and interest to your work while maintaining accuracy and detail. Focus on increasing your understanding of reflected light and on observing the colors of reflected light. Designed for watercolor, colored pencil, and graphite artists. Limit 15. 9 - 9:50 am: Conifers Exposed - Dick Rauh

Join our own effervescent plant guru as he takes you on an armchair tour of the ancient world of cone-bearing plants. Dick will cover tips for correct identification using architecture and differences in the branching patterns, leaf forms, and cone structures. Limit 100.

10 - 10:50 am: Framing and Understanding Your Choices - Debra D’Souza

Not all framers are alike. Understanding their language is the first step in selecting a framer you can trust to handle your artwork correctly and with the care it deserves. We’ll discuss frames, mats, mounting techniques and glazing options, plus ASBA exhibition requirements. Limit 100.
