Featuring Clayton, Henry Clay Frick’s 1881 home, filled with fine and decorative arts. Tours of the house, enjoying the grounds, which boast over 50 species of trees, and the family’s antique car and carriage museum will round out your afternoon. Limit 52. Fee $50.
Mixed Media with John Gist, 1:15pm-4:15pm
Primarily using graphite pencil, but including watercolor and colored pencil, students will create a drawing with a wide range of texture and tone. The focus will be on the sculptural and textural qualities of our plant source rather than on color. Limit 15. Fee $50.
Say It with Flowers: Illuminate Your Soul with Kandy Phillips (2-part: Friday afternoon and full-day on Saturday),
1:15pm-4:15pm
Learn basic raised and flat gilding techniques to illuminate a letter, meaningful word or short phrase illustrated with a symbolic floral motif. Foundational and Italic calligraphy styles will be introduced along with the language of flowers found in both medieval illumination and Victorian thought and practice. Note: continues on Saturday. Limit 15. Fee $155 (includes some materials)
The Art of Fixing Mistakes with Catherine Watters,

We all make mistakes… and they can be fixed! Learn to use a variety of lifting brushes, sandpaper, melamine sponge and dental tweezers to make those mistakes disappear. Useful tips for lifting highlights and veins will also be given. Limit 15. Fee $50.
Juror Training with Carol Woodin, 1:15pm-4:15pm
A review of the topics needed for serving as a juror in ASBA exhibitions such as ASBA policies and procedures for jurors, criteria used in scoring entered artwork, and discussion and scoring a series of images of botanical art. Limit 15.

How to Care for Your Original Works on Paper with

Hunt’s Acting Curator of Art will describe archival matting and hinging techniques for original artworks on paper and vellum and methods of archival storage. A handout will be provided to all conference attendees. Limit 40. (Hunt Institute)
History of Botanical Illustration with Charlotte Tancin,
2:30pm-3:30pm
View published botanical illustrations in Renaissance herbals, 17th-century florilegia, historical botany studies, works on travel and exploration, horticultural manuals and serials, and color-plate folios. Five centuries of artistic styles and reproduction techniques will be noted, highlighted by examples of original art and its published reproduction. Limit 40. (Hunt Institute)

TGrant Recipients and Projects Panel with Lee McCaffree, Moderator, 5:30pm-6:15pm
Join the 2009 ASBA Artist and Education Grant recipients as they present their exciting projects. While increasing the artist’s skill and knowledge, each project also educated the public about botanical art. A must if you are considering applying for a grant.Limit 75.
ASBA Wildflower Forum - Developing a Touring Exhibition in your own State with Derek Norman, Moderator, 6:30-7:30pm
Join Kathie Miranda and Carol Till who developed and coordinated group traveling exhibitions in their home states. Invasive Plants of Connecticut - Kathie Miranda’s project - ended its run with a two year stay at Yale’s Peabody Museum. Carol Till received an award from the Colorado Rare Plant Conservation Initiative for coordinating “RARE Imperiled Plants of Colorado”, which she will discuss. Limit 75.
Artist Trading Card Workshop and Swap with Elaine Bergstrom and Steve Hnat from Top Notch Art Supply, 6:30pm -8pm
Please join the Allegheny Highlands Botanical Art Societyand Top Notch Art Supply for a workshop creating and swapping Artist Trading Cards (ATC). This is a fun way to share your art, connect with other artists and collect art in a casual environment. Top Notch Art Supply in Pittsburgh will provide the cards and M. Graham watercolor paints will be available to create your original 2.5" x 3.5" collectable cards. You may also bring your own art materials along. Any medium is acceptable (colored pencils, collage, pastels, watercolors, ink, photos, etc.), as long as the theme is botanical, of course. If you prefer to bring completed cards to the event, be sure to be there at 8 p.m. for the card swap. For each card you bring, you will be able to draw another person’s card from the barrel. Limit 75.
